Because of inflammation in his right thumb, he only managed to pitch for three innings with 45 throws in his initial appearance as a Blue Jay, allowing two earned runs via two solo home runs.
One day after being put on the injured list, he got a cortisone shot in his troublesome thumb. During a press conference on Friday, Jays’ manager John Schneider mentioned that Scherzer underwent a second cortisone injection but this time targeting a separate area of the same thumb. The right-handed pitcher plans to start throwing again once he meets up with the team in Houston next week.

He originally skipped the first start on March 29 due to discomfort in his right lat muscle; however, following the game, he stated that the problem with his thumb was actually responsible. The subsequent day, he was placed on the injured list because of an issue with his throwing thumb.
Scherzer, who is 40 years old, entered into a one-year contract worth $15.5 million.

During the off-season, he grappled with various injuries throughout his 2024 season with the Texas Rangers. He made only nine starts for them as he recuperated from offseason back surgery, dealt with a thumb problem, and subsequently faced a shoulder injury when he returned to pitching.
