This marks the concluding chapter of the cherished TV series that was adapted into a movie franchise—”Downton Abbey.” Appropriately named “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” the third film released its trailer at CinemaCon and will soon be available for viewers worldwide. Julian Fellowes is back to pen this latest addition, which takes place within the same world as his new show, “The Gilded Age.” In previous comments, Fellowes hinted that the secretive storyline of “The Grand Finale” remains
“emboldened”
due to the invention of the clock timer that occurs during “The Gilded Age.”
The summary for “The Grand Finale” states: “It’s finally time to bid farewell to ‘Downton Abbey.’ Focus Features will be presenting the cherished Crawley family in cinemas for the last chapter of the immensely popular series penned by its originator, Julian Fellowes.”
The star-studded cast features Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, Dominic West, Penelope Wilton, Arty Froushan, Joely Richardson, Paul Copley, and Douglas Reith. Returning for another round is actor Paul Giamatti reprising his recurring character from previous seasons.

Fellowes is returning to pen the screenplay, with Simon Curtis resuming his role as director. Following the conclusion of its six-season span, the initial “Downton Abbey” movie hit theaters in 2019. In 2022, a follow-up titled “Downton Abbey: A New Era” also made its debut. Throughout its tenure, the “Downton Abbey” television series garnered an impressive total of 69 Emmy nominations, clinching 15 wins. Notably, the late Maggie Smith secured three individual acting accolades; additionally, the program received top honors such as Outstanding Drama Series or Movie, alongside distinctions for hairstyling, set decoration, musical scoring, direction, scripting, camera work, and costume design.

In 2022, he expressed openness to return for a third film within the franchise provided the storyline was compelling. He stated, “Over time these decisions get clearer; should there continue to be interest in more ‘Downton’ stories and most of the cast wish to participate, I would not stand in the way.” He added with a hint of surprise at his own recurring involvement, “This has happened five times before where I thought my farewell was final, yet here we all are once again.”
“The Final Chapter of Downton Abbey” is produced by Fellowes, Liz Trubridge, and Gareth Neame. Nigel Marchant serves as an executive producer.
Focus Features has also produced additional films such as Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet,” Ethan Coen’s “Honey Don’t!,” Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” and Daniel Day-Lewis coming back to acting in “Anemone,” which was helmed by his son Ronan Day-Lewis.
