Despite initially announcing the closure of numerous outlets as part of its bankruptcy proceedings earlier this year, Big Lots plans to relaunch close to 80 stores nationwide in June.
The re-openings were verified to Nexstar on Monday by Variety Wholesalers, the company based in North Carolina that has purchased numerous Big Lots stores.
Why It Matters
Last September, Big Lots, a discount retailer offering budget-friendly furniture, home decorations, mattresses, and various daily necessities, declared bankruptcy. The firm attributed its downfall to multiple economic issues, such as increased inflation and interest rates.
At the eleventh hour, investment firm Gordon Brothers stepped in to save the company, acquiring Big Lots through an “asset-backed transaction.” They quickly sold off numerous stores to Variety Wholesalers, who plans to reinstate operations at many sites where Big Lots had ceased activities.
What To Know
Over 100 Big Lots stores have already resumed operations under the management of Variety Wholesalers, with an additional approximately 80 locations scheduled to reopen across multiple states throughout June.
