The Red Sox have declared that they will designate the right-handed pitcher for removal.
Michael Fulmer
For the assignment, this creates an opening for a right-handed player.
Hunter Dobbins
, who has been called up to the major league team. Additionally, the Red Sox have activated their third baseman.
Alex Bregman
from the fatherhood roster and selected infielder/outfielder
Nick Sogard
.
Fulmer, who is 32 years old, was recently chosen for Boston’s team a couple of days back. On Monday, he became the starting pitcher.

The Rays decimated them, conceding 11 earned runs in just 2⅓ innings. Fulmer entered the game and threw 2⅔ innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits and two walks while fanning two batters. Since then, he hasn’t taken part in any pitching activities, but the Sox had to clear space for Dobbins, who will be making an impromptu start tonight, pushing Fulmer off the roster.
The conclusion might turn out to be quite anticlimactic for a partnership that has lasted several years between the Sox and Fulmer. After undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery towards the end of October 2023, he faced the prospect of sitting out the whole 2024 campaign. Subsequently, he inked a two-year minor league contract with the Red Sox, intended to support his rehabilitation process and possible comeback in 2025.
The Red Sox transitioned him into a starting role this season, which was intriguing since he had primarily pitched in relief leading up to joining their team. In the spring, he posted a 0.79 ERA followed by a 3.09 ERA across three minor league appearances. This led to his appearance in the major leagues on Monday, where he filled in during a losing effort.
Given how limited this data set is, it’s difficult to derive significant insights. Since he has entered DFA limbo, the Red Sox now have one week to either negotiate his trade or clear him through waivers. As the waiver procedure requires two days for completion, all potential trades must be finalized within the upcoming five-day window.
Before his extended break, Fulmer experienced several notable achievements. In 2016, he earned the American League Rookie of the Year award after pitching 159 innings for the Tigers with an impressive 3.06 ERA. Over subsequent seasons, his performance saw a slight decline until he took time off in 2019 to recover from Tommy John surgery. Upon returning, he achieved renewed success as a relief pitcher, maintaining a 2.97 ERA in 2021. However, thisERA increased to 3.39 in 2022 and further rose to 4.42 the next year prior to him needing additional surgical intervention.
Maybe Fulmer could attract some interest due to his track record. Should he pass through waivers, he possesses ample service time to decline an outright assignment and opt for free agency instead.
