Refresh for more…As anticipated, 20th Century Studio’sDevil Wears Prada 2 was fashion the top performer at the global weekend box office with a second week of$118.8M ($43 million domestic, a strong drop of -44%, and $75.8 million international across 51 regions, a -46% decline), bringing its total global earnings to$433.2M ($144.8 million domestically, $288.4 million internationally), and transmittingDisney beyond the $2 billionglobal mark. The Mouse House becomes the first major motion picture studio to surpass that milestone year to date, their other successful films includingHoppers ($371.6M), Send Help ($94 million WW) and the continued success from last year’sAvatar: Fire & Ash and Zootopia 2. We mentioned on Friday that the film was directed by David FrankelDevil Wears Prada 2has already exceeded the filmmaker’s original 2006 title’s worldwide total earnings of $326.5 million.
Note since we published the domestic numbers last night, the studios have increased their North American weekend projections due to Mother’s Day. We’ll find out what remains.
Michael as we mentioned, it has surpassed the half billion mark, and it’s the updated global total.$577M ($240.4 million in the U.S., $336.88 million internationally) following a$95M third weekend ($36.5M in the U.S., strong -32% drop, $58.5M internationally, impressive -33%). The film remains ahead of its trajectoryBohemian Rhapsody at the same time, including and excluding China. As we have mentioned, the Graham King production has already surpassed the domestic earnings of the producer’sBohemian Rhapsody ($216.7M).
Arriving with a lighter touch, yet higher than its 2021 version which was affected by the Covid pandemic, is New Line/Warner Bros’Mortal Kombat II with $63Mglobally. Warners thinks the film could achieve a $40 million domestic debut while international earnings are projected at $23 million (below the anticipated $30 million) across 78 territories on 31,000 screens. The movie had an $80 million production cost before marketing. Following that record-breaking red band trailer last year, and with tracking suggesting a positive $50 million outlook, this is somewhat disappointing. At the same time, there’s no sense of regret in shifting the release date to mid-May from October of last year. The sequel is part of the summer box office momentum (in North America, all titles earned $162.1 million according to Comscore, an 89% increase from a year earlier). However, it’s important to note that when you have a major marketing launch with a strong asset like that red-band trailer from last year, telling fans the sequel was meant to open in mid-October 2025, and then changing it up, there’s a complete re-calibration and re-introduction needed in the campaign to re-engage fans, which costs money. The sequel will soon exceed the total lifetime earnings of the 2021 film ($84.4 million worldwide), which had a theatrical day-and-date release in the U.S. alongside HBO Max as part of Warners’ pandemic-era initiative.
Amazon/MGM Studios’ The Sheep Detectives arrived with a worldwide beginning$28M (studio is seeing a $15.9M North American opening with $12.1M75 territories overseas, a 70% offshore presence.
Paramount’s Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft concert movie opened to $20.1M Global ($7.5M in the U.S., $12.6M internationally across 56 markets, with a 99% international presence). 3D accounted for 86% of the international box office and 88% of the domestic box office. The best opening for the concert film was in Sweden, where it debuted at No. 2 with $287K, while the highest-grossing region was the UK, earning $2.3M and opening in fifth place at 578 locations. It would have been intriguing to see how this movie might have performed on a different release date, closer to the end of her 2025 tour (or even placed between the 2024 and 2025 tours), showcasing the full power of Imax without any fanboy-driven wide releases in the market.
Premium large format screens accounted for 26% of the film’s North American box office revenue, with 16% coming from Dolby-equipped screens.
