Mayim Bialik, known for her roles in Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, has opened up about a challenging experience with a GLP-1 medication that left her suffering from severe side effects. In an essay published by The Free Press, she detailed how a single injection led to weeks of gastrointestinal issues, forcing her to seek IV fluids and struggle with basic daily activities.
Bialik, 50, initially took the medication not for weight loss but at the recommendation of several doctors who believed it could help manage symptoms related to her autoimmune conditions. These include Graves’ disease, connective tissue disease, mast cell activation syndrome, Sjögren’s syndrome, and dysautonomia. She explained that she had been dealing with these conditions for years and was hoping the drug might offer relief.
However, what followed was far more intense than she anticipated. Bialik described experiencing explosive diarrhea, severe bloating, cramping, and full-body aches. She also struggled to keep food or water down, eventually requiring IV fluids to stay hydrated. “For the first two days, I ate maybe one cup of rice and half a banana,” she wrote. “I couldn’t even keep electrolyte drinks down.”
Despite the physical toll, Bialik said the experience also revealed how deeply ingrained concerns about her body remained. “At least you might lose some weight,” she thought during her misery, highlighting the complex relationship many people have with their appearance.
She ultimately decided not to continue taking the medication and gave away the remaining doses. After visiting a gastroenterologist, she learned that while her reaction was dramatic, it was not unusual. The doctor advised her to expect additional digestive issues for weeks due to the medication’s long half-life.
A Complicated Relationship with Body Image
In her essay, Bialik reflected on her long and complicated relationship with body image. She noted that she was largely unconcerned about her weight as a child but began gaining weight after being prescribed medication as a teenager. Over time, she developed a sense of shame around her body and a disordered relationship with food.
She also mentioned that early menopause contributed to weight gain in recent years, though she emphasized that losing weight was not the primary reason she agreed to try the medication. Instead, she was hoping the drug’s anti-inflammatory properties might help address her chronic conditions.
Bialik shared that three separate doctors recommended the GLP-1 medication, and she hoped it might offer relief. However, the adverse reaction she experienced was far worse than expected. “To say I had an adverse reaction would be somewhat of an understatement,” she recalled.

The Broader Conversation Around Weight-Loss Drugs
Bialik’s experience has sparked a broader conversation about the growing use of weight-loss drugs, particularly in Hollywood. She noted that social media is saturated with advertisements and influencer testimonials, while celebrities often appear noticeably thinner on red carpets and magazine covers. She also described knowing women in Los Angeles who take the drugs despite not being considered overweight, highlighting the intense pressure many feel to become thinner.
After leaving her gastroenterologist’s office, Bialik caught a glimpse of herself in a reflection and noticed physical changes she had long wanted. “I did not see under my first chin that second chin on which I had been fixating for months—because it wasn’t there,” she wrote. “My cheekbones were visible.”

Lessons Learned and Moving Forward
Despite the challenges, Bialik said the experience gave her a new appreciation for living with chronic gastrointestinal conditions. During the worst of her symptoms, she struggled to leave the house and often avoided eating or drinking before going anywhere out of fear of another episode.
“I now recognize the deep pain and embarrassment that comes from a body that betrays you in ways you can’t explain to others at a dinner party,” she wrote.
Weeks after taking the injection, Bialik said she was still experiencing lingering symptoms, but she remains committed to finding answers. Her story highlights the complexities of managing chronic health conditions and the pressures surrounding body image, especially in the entertainment industry.
