The Enduring Legacy of “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men
“Although we’ve come to the end of the road, still I can’t let go.” These words, from the iconic song “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men, have resonated with listeners for decades. Released in June 1992 as a single for the film Boomerang, the track was written by Babyface, Antonio L.A. Reid, and Daryl Simmons. It quickly became known for its emotional lyrics that explore themes of love, heartbreak, and the struggle to let go.
The song was part of the group’s debut album, Cooleyhighharmony, which had already been released earlier that year. Three weeks after the single’s release, it made its way onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart. By the end of summer, “End of the Road” had reached the number one spot and remained there for an impressive 13 weeks. It was eventually replaced by “How Do You Talk to an Angel” by the Heights in mid-November.
In addition to its chart success, the song was recognized on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1992 list. It was also ranked as the sixth most successful song of the decade from 1990 to 1999.
Interestingly, “End of the Road” was originally intended to be kept by Babyface himself. However, after hearing the group’s version, he realized that their interpretation was superior. In a podcast episode hosted by Boyz II Men member Shawn Stockman, Babyface shared his thoughts on why he decided to give away the hit.
“When I finished the song, I thought it was really good, and I thought, ‘Damn, I wanna keep this one for myself,’ and I was really considering it,” Babyface, whose real name is Kenneth Brian Edmonds, admitted. “I listened to [Boyz II Men] and I thought that it would be fun to do it with you guys. What I didn’t know, was how good you really were.”
A Song That Defined a Film
“End of the Road” plays a pivotal role in the climactic scenes of the romantic comedy Boomerang. The film follows Marcus Graham (played by Eddie Murphy), a cocky and womanizing advertising executive who experiences a taste of his own medicine when his new boss, Jacqueline (played by Robin Givens), treats him with the same indifference he shows women. The song is featured during the emotional moments when Marcus realizes his true feelings for Jacqueline and faces the heartbreak of their relationship ending.

The Story Behind Boyz II Men

McCary, the group’s bassist, left in 2003 due to health issues. The group first gained commercial success with the release of their debut album, Cooleyhighharmony, in 1991. This album included the singles “Motownphilly” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” both of which peaked within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100.
Over the years, Boyz II Men has released 14 studio albums, with their most recent being Under the Streetlight in 2017.
