In fact, the Wi-Fi on UK trains ranks as the third slowest when compared to 18 major railway networks across Europe and Asia. This situation stands in stark contrast to the impressive performance of Irish trains, which boast Wi-Fi speeds that are 25 times faster than those in Britain.

Research conducted by Ookla reveals that British trains have an average upload speed of just 1.07 megabits per second. This speed is typically sufficient only for basic internet activities such as browsing and sending emails. A major contributing factor to the slow connectivity is that many rail operators are still utilizing older Wi-Fi 4 technology.

Luke Kehoe, a researcher at Ookla, emphasizes the changing expectations of passengers. He notes that “Europe and Asia’s rail networks, long heralded as a backbone of economic competitiveness, are now judged not only on punctuality and comfort but on the quality of the digital experience onboard.” He highlights how high-quality train Wi-Fi has transitioned from being a luxury to an essential component of rail infrastructure. Today’s commuters anticipate a broadband-like experience for streaming, work calls, and gaming, even while traversing picturesque landscapes such as the Swiss Alps or Mount Fuji.

Comparing Global Wi-Fi Performance

When comparing the performance of various railway networks, Sweden leads with an impressive median download speed of 64.58 megabits per second. Following closely is Switzerland, with a median download speed of 29.79 megabits. In stark contrast, the median download speed for British trains is a mere 1.09 megabits, significantly lagging behind Romania, which offers speeds twelve times faster.

The challenges of providing robust Wi-Fi on trains are well-known.
