After Katherine Short was found deceased at the age of 42 in her Hollywood Hills residence on February 23, a representative for theOnly Murders in the BuildingStar conveyed Martin’s “deep sorrow.”
The Short family is heartbroken by this tragedy and requests privacy during this difficult period,” the spokesperson stated. “Katherine was cherished by everyone and will be remembered for the brightness and happiness she added to the world.
Two days later, Short’s cause of deathwas confirmed following a suicide. The comedian has remained out of the public eye while preparing to releaseMarty, Life Is Shorta new documentary about him, on May 12.
Short sat down for his first interview since his daughter’s passing on Sunday, sharingCBS Sunday Morning Correspondent Tracy Smith stated, “It’s been a nightmare for the family. However, the realization that mental health issues and cancer, like my wife’s condition, are both illnesses — and at times, they can be life-threatening.”
It’s not only Katherine’s passing that has deeply affected Short’s life recently. Prior to that, he had to say goodbye to friends and colleagues Diane Keaton, Rob Reiner, and Catherine O’Hara, all within a short period of time. AndMarty, Life Is Short functions as a letter of love to his wife Nancy, or Nan, passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010.
“My daughter struggled for a long time with severe mental health issues, including borderline personality disorder, and did everything she could until she couldn’t anymore. So Nan’s final words to me were, ‘Mart, let me go.’ She was essentially saying, ‘Dad, let me go,’ ” Short recalled.
If I wasn’t planning to discuss this, I would have promoted the documentary, as it is – listen, it’s titledMarty, Life Is Short,” the actor said. “And then, all of a sudden, in October, I lost Diane Keaton on the same day my sister-in-law, Nancy’s sister, passed away from cancer. Rob and Michelle have been my close friends for 40 years — Reiner. Then there’s Catherine O’Hara, and also my daughter. I’m talking about this all happening in four months. It’s overwhelming.”

When Smith inquired about how Short managed to understand the extent of his losses, he replied, “You can’t. You just have to take a breath in, take a breath out.” Since Short has “never attended therapy,” he explained his method of dealing with it like this: “What I do is I speak into my phone and then I type it out, read it over, and rewrite it before storing it away.” In this manner, “you realize if you’re saying the same things, perhaps you’re starting to move forward a little.”
Short concluded the interview by sharing some of those insights: “I believe we all are in denial about our limited time on this earth. It’s very hard to accept… But the more you accept it, I think it does uplift you and make you feel that life is a complex little journey. And the more we approach it with wisdom, the happier we will be.”
