Thor Director Remembers Chris Hemsworth’s Chicken-Eating, Push-Up Stunts on Set

If you can believe it, it’s been 15 years since viewers first encountered Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder in the initial film.Thorfilm! The actor is now scheduled to take on his role again inAvengers: Doomsday and theoretically, Secret Wars. Furthermore, Hemsworth has previously stated that he wasalready brainstorming ideas for Thor beyond that. Although many are eager for what’s ahead, the original director of the franchise, Kenneth Branagh, is looking back at Hemsworth’s physical condition and dietary choices during the production of the first film.

Branagh directed Marvel Studios’ Thorand, as the British filmmaker mentionedBusiness Insider, he worked hard to secure that opportunity. To celebrate the film’s 15th anniversary, Branagh recently provided significant details about his only Marvel Cinematic Universe project. When discussing working with Chris Hemsworth, Branagh emphasized how the actor gained muscle for his role, and I’m already exhausted just hearing about all the chickens that were part of it:

[Laughs.] No, he didn’t become too big. He did throw me several times. I would talk to him, and then a door would open, and suddenly four whole chickens would be placed in front of him. That would sometimes surprise me because I didn’t really get much out of him after that. He’d say, [speaking in an Australian accent] “Gotta go eat, mate, 45 minutes have passed. I need another f* chicken.”

For some background, a whole chicken typically contains around 1500 calories – which seems unbelievable to me since that’s roughly what I consume in a day. Regarding Chris Hemsworth’s workout routine for portraying a superhero, he likely consumed about 4,000 calories, and that’s the amount one of his stuntmen also ate to prepare for the role, according toCentr.

Consuming so much chicken seems tiring to me, but the actor needed to maintain his large physique for the filming. Eating was just one aspect of it, as he also did many push-ups, as Branagh remembered:

But I recall the moment he first removed his shirt. I felt a bit embarrassed and said, “I think we need you to take your shirt off.” He responded, “Are you kidding? I spent the last nine months preparing for this, of course I’m going to take my shirt off.” Then he went outside, and I believe I watched him do 200 push-ups before returning inside, and [Natalie] Portman turned around and gasped, and I said, “That’s it! That’s what you do on film.”

It’s amusing, as many individuals might not consider all the techniques actors like Hemsworth employ to remain in shape, yet it must have been truly impressive to see. 200 pushups? I get exhausted doing just a few – but I’m not someone who portrays a Marvel hero, naturally. What’s even more astonishing is that Hemsworth has had to keep up with this routine since he’s been playing Thor every few years since then.

Hemsworth has also had to change his weight for other roles he’s taken on. For instance, he recently mentionedhaving to shed a significant amount of weight right after the first Thormovie to appear in Ron Howard’sRushIn order to “fit into the race car.” Considering it has been more than ten years since Hemsworth collaborated with Branagh on that initial film, I’m sure the actor and his fitness team have perfected this process by now. So I wonder how many chickens he might have consumed and how many push-ups he may have done for his most recent appearance as Thor.
