Not every promising concept is meant to reach completion, andThe White Lotus‘ fourth season may be evidence of that, as the continuous production is now more than two weeks since the unexpected andunexpected exit of co-star Helena Bonham Carter. Creator Mike White wrote the role specifically for theCrownveteran, but it has been reported that creative disagreements were the cause, and theactress was reportedly not “loud” enoughregarding her performance. Now, Season 4 co-star Steve Coogan has commented on the matter.
The BAFTA-winning Coogan (whose most recent television projectLegends hit the 2026 TV schedule on May 7 via Netflix subscription) is among numerous high-level actors committed for theFrance-set storylinewhich will be partially held at the Cannes Film Festival. It seems he’s enjoying himself while portraying his character, even though he couldn’t reveal all the details freely. Talking to Deadline on the BAFTA TV red carpet (viaX clip), he also provided details about Carter’s departure, stating:
It took a different path. It was as if, at times, you realize something isn’t functioning as intended, regarding the character and the overall flow of the story. So that was a mutual choice. The entire section was completely rewritten.
It might be worth mentioning that Steve Coogan’s spoken response was not as simple as it appears when written down, featuring several stutters and hesitations around the words. (Not as much hesitation, though.) It could have been that he wasn’t prepared to discuss it—uncommon, considering the fan reaction to Carter leaving the show—but it might also have been an effort to avoid placing more blame on one party than the other.
The role created for Helena Bonham Carter has been characterized as a former Hollywood star trying to make a comeback with a late-stage career revival. It doesn’t appear to be the most enjoyable character to interact with, and it sounded to me like a mix of Michelle Monaghan and Parker Posey’s characters from Season 3. However, we might never find out if that comparison is accurate.
The manner in which Coogan presents it suggests that creator Mike White and Carter reached a mutual understanding about the project’s future, with her stepping down being preferable to altering any character aspects that might have been at fault. This seems odd to me, given that White actually created a completely new character for Laura Dern, who joined the show after Carter left. Maybe this new role wouldn’t have fit the original concept.Fight Club co-star’s talents as much.
Despite his difficulty in articulating the cast changes, Steve Coogan seemed very happy to be showcasing his diverse talents in this extravagant, vacation-themed production. (It seems appropriate for a filmmaker known for a series called)The Trip.) Here’s what he shared regarding hisWhite Lotusexperiences so far with Mike White:
I’m really liking it. He’s very cooperative. He allows you to add details and improvise, and I’m in my familiar area.
Steve Coogan is perhaps best recognized globally for his outstanding portrayals of the television host Alan Partridge, and one can only wish that some of the actor’s spontaneous moments inThe White Lotusreaches into some of that same mental space. I mean, it would be even better if he was genuinely portraying Alan Partridge on vacation, but that’s probably a crossover only meant for fan fiction.
The White Lotusis expected to keep filming for the coming months, with Season 4 anticipated to debut on HBO in early 2027. In the meantime, the first three seasons are available to watch in their entirety throughHBO Max subscription.
