Wembanyama’s Impact on the Regular Season
During the regular season, the Knicks had a 2-1 record against the Spurs. One of their notable victories came in the NBA Cup Championship, where they defeated the Spurs 124-113 in Las Vegas. However, Wembanyama was under injury management during that stretch, playing 25 minutes off the bench and scoring 18 points with six rebounds.
In a previous matchup at Madison Square Garden in early March, Wembanyama put up 25 points and 13 rebounds in an 114-89 loss to the Knicks. Mikal Bridges stepped up with a strong performance, recording 25 points and five blocks. Despite this loss, the Spurs managed to secure a win against the Knicks earlier in the season.
The Spurs’ lone victory over the Knicks came on December 31, when they won 134-132 in San Antonio. Wembanyama scored 31 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and blocked a shot. Julian Champagnie and De’Aaron Fox also contributed significantly, adding 36 and 26 points respectively.
Drummond’s Experience Against Wembanyama
Drummond has faced Wembanyama as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers this past season, primarily as a backup to Joel Embiid. The 76ers played the Spurs twice and lost both games. Although Wembanyama was on the court, neither performance was particularly impressive compared to what he has shown in recent games.
Despite this, Drummond has experienced firsthand how good Wembanyama is in just his third year in the league. He acknowledges that the Knicks will need to find a way to limit Wembanyama’s effectiveness during the NBA Finals.
Strategies to Counter Wembanyama
Many analysts believe that the Knicks’ big men, Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson, could match up well against Wembanyama. Their plan would be to draw him away from the paint and force him to rely on his jump shots. While Drummond doesn’t believe the Knicks can defend Wembanyama effectively during these Finals, he still picked New York to win the series against the Spurs during the N3ON stream.
